This woodcut shows a special device designed by Robert Fludd (1574-1637). The idea of this clockwork creation was to bring forth enlightenment in those who used it.
The aim is for you to sit and meditate as the machine comes to life. Then as you remain in a state of full open-hearted receptivity, figures representing the different planets appear and perform for you. Each figure is blessed and made of the correct metals and stones for the kindness and insight it will bestow on you. As they travel to the top of the pyramid, your consciousness raises with them.
Fludd says that this would be quite inexpensive to build and of great value to anyone who owned one. He never mentions it, but I suspect that this was inspired by the memory theatre of Giulio Camillo which worked in a similar way.
