UNITED GRAND LODGE OF ENGLAND

MASONIC OPEN EVENING

A rare opportunity to see the inside of a lodge room and find out the facts about Freemasonry

Goliath Lodge no.5595 will be hosting an open evening at Freemasons Hall, Great Queen Street, Covent Garden on 20 November 2019. After a short formal lodge meeting, for Masons only, the lodge room will be opened to our Ladies and other non-Masonic visitors, while the Masons remain in their full regalia. After a brief introduction to the lodge and its officers, memory expert and Masonic historian Martin Faulks will present his talk Why Do Freemasons Learn Ritual? We will then dine together at the Grand Connaught Rooms next door. Everyone is welcome!

WHY DO FREEMASONS LEARN RITUAL?

Freemasonry is the largest Fraternity in the history of mankind. The practitioners of Freemasonry are known for their knowledge of ceremonies and their charitable endeavours, but what’s the connection between these two activities? In a time when modern technology has all but eliminated the need to remember anything, why is it that millions of men all over the world dedicate their time to being able to recall verbatim over three hours of ancient teachings? Come and see the inside of a Masonic Lodge and meet the officers, after which memory expert and Masonic historian Martin Faulks will explain the mysterious origins of Masonic memory practice and its value in the modern day.

Freemasons Hall is the headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). The Library and Museum are open to the public, and there are free hourly tours, including a visit to the Grand Temple. You can find details here.

There are many myths surrounding Freemasonry. Perhaps the first is that it is a “secret society”. In fact, although English Freemasonry went largely underground during the Second World War, it is now very much an open organisation. We do not hide our membership, and well-publicised meetings have been held in recent years in the Royal Albert Hall. As mentioned above, much of Freemasons Hall is open to the public, and the UGLE website will tell you a great deal about Freemasonry.

Nowadays, the only official “secrets” are the signs and words by which one Freemason recognises another, and even these have been publicly exposed many times. By the way, we do not use these signs and words to get on in business – they are only used in the lodge! We are happy to talk about Freemasonry, and tell you – and show you – in general terms what goes in the lodge room, although we won’t explain the ceremonies in detail. This is because much of the beauty and impression of a ceremony would be lost on a candidate for initiation who knows exactly what to expect. This is one reason why lodge meetings are only open to members, but in fact that is common among many clubs and societies anyway. The initiation ceremonies, incidentally, do not involve any kind of ritual humiliation! They are dramas designed to teach moral and spiritual values.

Freemasonry is a charitable and social organisation. Lodges under the authority of UGLE are specifically banned from discussing religion or politics at meetings, and are open to men of any faith which professes a belief in a Supreme Being. Although UGLE lodges are for men only, there are other Masonic organisations in England which have ladies-only or mixed lodges.

If you would like to come on 20 November, the cost of the dinner is £47.50 per person. We will meet at 16.45 and the formal Lodge meeting will begin at 17.30.

The Power of the Pythia

May 28, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

In ancient times the most renowned prophetess was based at the oracle at Delphi. She was gifted with miraculous powers, not only to give prophecy, but also to bring about magic through the powers of the gods she channelled. For centuries people have been searching for the key to her power – Hercules stole the tripod on which she sat thinking that it must be the key, Hadrian breathed in the fumes from the vent over which she sat hoping for some of her inspiration. Even today people are speculating, did she have visions after being bitten by a snake, was she ingesting extract of laurel or burning their leaves?

Yet, if we read the writing of Plutarch (who was a priest of Apollo at Delphi) the answer is clear. He states that her abilities were a result of many years of intense training. If you read carefully he even gives a hint as to her powers work. “The soul has great powers of memory. But memory is the hearing of silent things and the sight of invisible things. Hence it is not remarkable if, having power over what no longer exists, it grasps in advance many of the things that have not yet happened.”

The Hermetic Yogi?

May 27, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Ammonius Saccus was an Egyptian Priest who lived in Alexandria, Egypt 3rd century AD. His first name is Egyptian in honour of the god Ammon. His second name is suspected to be Śākyas the ruling clan of India to which Gautama Buddha also belonged.

He was greatly respected as a teacher in ancient times and had many students. The most famous of which Plotinus. It’s through the writing of Plotinus we can see the harmonisation of Neoplatoic thought and practice with Vedantic philosophy. Indeed although these texts only use western philosophical terminology, they contain descriptions of the various states of consciousness that can be achieved through meditation that would make any yogi or yogini proud.

It’s clear that for Ammonius there was but one truth and that although we use several names for the gods, different terms for practices or ideas, we should reach beyond the words, traditions and cultural barriers to grasp the universal truth.

No Smoke

May 18, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Nirvana is a well-known term from India . It’s often translated to mean “No wind” or “blown out” meaning a state of freedom from suffering and rebirth

Did you know that Classical Greek Philosophy had a similar concept?

Atypia (ἁτυφια) Means “freedom from smoke” and represents a pure state of mental clarity. The ability to see things exactly as they really are. Smoke (τύφος) signified mental confusion, ignorance, wilful mindlessness, arrogance, and conceit. Smoke is caused by false judgments of value, which cause negative emotions, arrogance, unnatural desires, and a vicious character.

To clear the smoke and see the truth one must develop self-sufficiency, equanimity, arete (an ongoing dedication to improve oneself in all ways ), love of humanity, parrhesia (the ability to speak and think in simple truthful ways), and acceptance of all aspects of life.

By the time this philosophy becomes part of the Hermetic movement the term drunkenness has replaced smoke as the symbol for confusion and lack of control through ignorance. Likewise the focus seems for have shifted away from asceticism more towards a focus developing awareness and good intentions in every moment.

About Martin

My life’s work has been to learn and master the art of meditation. To do this I have practiced and studied meditation with unbroken, daily discipline for over two decades as taught in the works of Franz Bardon. However, just like Bardon himself, I have also dedicated my life to gathering what is of use from different traditions around the world – whether hidden in the Japanese mountains, Egyptian desert or with the Indian yogis.
