What Is Hermeticism?

The tradition of Hermeticism comes from Ancient Egypt via the Ancient Greeks. Originally the name came from a mysterious figure known as Hermês Trismegistus (Greek for Thrice-Greatest Hermes), a Græco-Egyptian form of the great Egyptian God of Wisdom and Magic.

Its teachings documented a path of enlightenment and spiritual peace through harmonisation of the elements, both in the mind and body. This was said to ultimately lead to mastery of the self and, through this, life.

Hermeticism has much it can offer the modern practitioner as its methods are time tested, practical tools for those wishing to follow a path of self-improvement.

Hermetic Beliefs Include

  • Training of the mind through meditation, ritual practice, awareness exercises, imagination and correct thinking, can lead to the awakening of a higher self.
  • Believes that all things are formed from pure consciousness
  • Holds that underlying the Universe is a force of pure goodness
  • Asserts the divine is one but has many faces, forms of manifestation
  • Teach us that to find the wisdom, we must tune into and respect the forces of nature.
  • That each human being is a spark of this underlying goodness taking on material form to do good works
  • Believes in equality of the genders and races
  • Bases its philosophy on the four elements of fire, air, earth and water.
  • Encourages self-mastery through the cultivation of virtue.
  • Holds that growing knowledge and awareness is positive and that Science and religion should be one.
  • Teaches that the soul is immortal and this is one of many realms of existence.
  • Considers humanity to be on a spiritual journey to return to a state of unity with the all; the Great Work of humankind.
