Results – My Viparita Karani Mudra Experiment: Reversing the Body to Turn Back the Clock

 

My exploration of Viparita Karani Mudra, the inverted attitude posture, began with a burning question: could this ancient yogic practice actually reverse the aging process? Intrigued by its purported benefits and the tantalising claims of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and other ancient yogic texts, I embarked on a personal experiment to uncover the truth.

The Rejuvenation Quest:

Driven by a desire to defy the relentless march of time, I incorporated Viparita Karani into my daily routine, gradually increasing the duration with the ambitious goal of reaching the 2-hour daily practice mentioned in the ancient texts. My focus was laser-sharp: to tap into the rejuvenating potential of this pose and turn back the clock on my biological age.

Unexpected Validation:

Along the way, I stumbled upon the fascinating world of epigenetics and decided to track the impact of Viparita Karani on my biological age. To my utter astonishment, my epigenetic age actually decreased! This unexpected result suggested that the practice, combined with other healthy lifestyle choices, had indeed slowed down, or perhaps even reversed, my rate of ageing. Theories and Challenges:

While several theories scientific theories could explain this anti-aging effect – reduced stress, improved circulation, and hormonal balance, and regeneration of the thymus – my journey was not without its challenges. As I approached the 2-hour mark, I began experiencing persistent acid reflux, a reminder that even the most potent practices require balance and moderation.

Ancient Wisdom and Inner Alchemy:

Delving into traditional yogic texts, I discovered that this challenge wasn’t unexpected. The ancient yogis spoke of “Agni,” or inner fire, which could become imbalanced with the excessive or improper practice of Viparita Karani. My experience seemed to confirm this ancient wisdom.

However, the extended practice sessions also yielded unexpected rewards. As the practice deepened, I became increasingly aware of subtle energies within my body. It was as if the prolonged stillness of Viparita Karani had awakened an inner sight, granting me a direct vision of the Hatha Yoga alchemical processes at play. This direct observation of the inner forces, the flow of prana, and the interplay of energies was truly remarkable.

A New Path Unveiled:

This newfound awareness has ignited a deeper passion for yogic exploration. I believe that in the new year, armed with this heightened sensitivity and inner vision, I’ll be ready to undertake another yogic method to further my quest for self-realization and rejuvenation. Ultimately, my Viparita Karani experiment transcended the physical realm. It became a journey of self-discovery, confrontation, and integration. But most importantly, it opened my eyes to the subtle energetic dimension of yoga, revealing the profound transformative potential within.

The Journey Continues:

Though I no longer practice Viparita Karani for extended periods due to acid reflux, it remains a cherished practice that ignited a deeper exploration of the inner landscape and a quest to unlock the secrets of longevity. This experience has deepened my appreciation for the holistic nature of yoga, reminding me that true well-being encompasses not just the physical body but also the mind and spirit. It’s a reminder that the path of yoga is one of self-awareness, adaptation, and honouring our individual needs along the way.
